Graduation Ornament

This is a new ornament I just finished. I had a hard time photographing it in the light tent due to reflections in the room. I think I need to relocate my "photography studio"! There's more on this ornament at my companion blog:

http://www.memoriesunderglass.blogspot.com/ .

I've begun the second Blog dedicated to selling ornaments. I've also opened an Etsy store. So I've been busy! The gateway to both blogs and the Etsy Store is http://www.kathysweeney.com/ . Drop by for a visit!

Hugs,
Kathy

In Praise of Good Teachers & Their Students!

Linda Schrader with her Door Basket

Lorri Markford with her Door Basket

I love it when a student "gets it" and sees all the possibilities ahead. That moment wouldn't be possible without a teacher who shares that enthusiasm. Gini Conn of Spring Hill, Florida is just such a teacher!

Recently Gini purchased door basket surfaces for her students. After her first class I received this wonderful e-mail sharing her excitement! Well, I had to have pictures and I had to share them with you!

Hi Kathy, I ended up with 2 students last night, but they did a great job. I'm attaching their baskets. They're so excited! And they finished the whole thing in just over 2 hours! I'm planning on teaching it again next month.

They really love the surface and the project. Both of them were impressed with the way the doily worked.... It's really a wonderful feeling to teach a class like that! I don't think my feet touched the ground when I walked out of the store!

Thank you so much, Gini! And congratulations to Lorri and Linda for painting such beautiful baskets! I can't wait to see what you come up with for an Easter design!

Hugs,

Kathy

Making Progress

Had a great class with Joyce Hall yesterday. This little 10x10 is coming along. I worked on the background, table, vase and silver tray yesterday. I need to work on the tray a little more to correct the symmetry and to add reflections. After that I'll go back to the flowers and finish them up.

I'll post again when I finish. This one will be for sale for $35.00.

Red Sox Ornament

I haven't had time to finish up the bouquet painting but plan on doing so this weekend. I did, however, put together this little ornament at the request of my sister, Patty.

Patty, as I may have mentioned, lives in Colchester Vermont . . . or Red Sox Nation more specifically! So, with Spring Training JUST around the corner this is a little tribute to The Boys! Gooooo Sox!!

New Year: New Work in Progress!

My oil classes have finally resumed after the holiday break! I was always the teacher's pet who couldn't wait to go back to school! Nothing like a brand new #2 pencil and a clean notebook! Right, Mom?!

Well, that's how I felt yesterday when I arrived at class almost 30 minutes early...eager to breathe in the smells of the studio and see what new work Joyce had completed during the break.

For her demo Joyce showed us, for the new students, how to lay in or block in a painting. Focus on the large fields of color and areas of dark and light. This is my first pass at a 10x10 canvas with a floral bouquet. The bouquet is in a glass vase which sits on a silver tray. That will be my next challenge.

Silver may be a color but a silver tray is anything but silver! So much reflective light mirroring the purples and blues and yellows around it. And then there's the challenge of painting the elliptical shape of the tray and having it even!

More to come as I work on this new challenge!
