Last week I taught a craft class at the Lowcountry Senior Center. We shared the holiday spirit as we made these shell filled and crushed shell embellished ornaments. It was a great afternoon!

I plan to teach more arts and crafts projects in the days ahead. As of June 30th Eddie and I closed our cellular phone store. The last few months have been consumed with store closing related details and I've had little or no time to be creative.

After a brief period to catch my breath I'll be teaching classes again. I'm in the process of exploring additional venues. My son, Michael, is also helping me launch a new web site that will feature ornaments like this one as well as ornaments personalized with your favorite photo inside. We'll also have an arts and crafts section for both classes and finished home accents. Finally, we'll have a fine arts section with oil paintings for sale. How does that sound?!

Let me know what you think, and what else you might like to see on our new web site!

Kathy

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Setting Sun

Today's painting is of a sunset here at the beach. The oranges and yellows of the foliage, as well as the greens of the shrubbery really lend themselves to this technique. I do need to work on the tree trunk in the foreground on the right as well as the path itself as it recedes. They're both in shadow in the reference photo, but I'm not happy with them as is. I took a workshop with Elizabeth a few months ago and was just blown away. She is as nice as she is talented. I want to paint just like her one day.

I know that's a stretch. I'm only a beginner but I Dream Big, as my mom would say. That was mom's mantra when I was growing up. I passed it on to my children. I encouraged them to get out there and follow their dreams. And I tried to remember to do the same.

I remember when I wanted to fox hunt, but I hadn't left the class ring yet! My good friend Rod Swanson drove me and my horse over to Hitchcock Woods in Aiken, SC. The facility serves as a training course for the steeplechase. He made me jump every fence 3 times. I must have jumped 100 times that day. I hunted that season and eventually earned my colors as a member of the Middleton Place Hounds.

Painting is my new passion, and I hope to remember the lessons that I've learned not only about dreaming big, but also about having a plan in place to help make that dream a reality!

So Dream Big!!

Contact Kathy at kathysweeney@gmail.com

Stepping Out

This little painting was a challenge for me. The reference photo, taken by my son Michael, was of these gorgeous old oaks in the shade...with the sun poking through on some branches and shining on the distant marsh and tree line. It's hard, for me anyway, to convey the shade in the foreground and the sun in the background.

If we don't push ourselves to try new things then we never learn. It's not easy moving out of our comfort zone, is it? Yet, when we do manage to take that step we start to expand our comfort zone! I ended up leaving the fabric more violet than it actually is because I liked the purple/yellow complement. The value study exercises have really helped me.

Last Monday in class I started a new exercise. Each exercise is designed to have you use a different technique as you approach a painting. The goal is to have you explore different techniques, styles, and results as you develop your own style. The next exercise uses a combination of a value lay-in with a large filbert, applying color with a flat in short cross-hatching strokes, and finishing details with a round brush. I found a reference photo of a large MacKenzie-Childs planter made with broken pottery pieces and filled with lush greenery and flowers. Can't wait to get back to it tomorrow!

It's the perfect weather day to stay cozy in the house and get out the paints. When I was at the workshop with Elizabeth Pruitt I picked up a still life packet with brass and white roses. I can't wait to paint it today! AND I may even get out the clay! I have a small tin just begging to be covered!

Enjoy YOUR day!

Kathy

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Sarah and Nana's Great Adventure!

My seven year old granddaughter, Sarah Mae, came to visit over the weekend and together we made a Valentine's gift for her mom, my daughter, Rebecca. If you're going, or thinking about it. don't miss the opportunity to paint with her!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Violet Underpainting

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my painting teacher has implemented a class syllabus which begins with 3 mandatory paintings. This is the beginning stage of one of those paintings.

The reference photo, which I'll scan and post with the finished painting, is of three apples sitting on the back of a sofa in a very sunny window. Joyce has quite a few of these photos with either apples or pears. I painted another version of these apples last year using a palette knife.

I enjoy this approach of scrubbing in the values...finding the negative spaces between the apples to help define the apples. My teacher, Joyce Hall, has given us a wonderful curriculum for the year. It was designed to take the new student from the first class through a variety of exercises over an extended period of time. These twelve exercises are technique based and each requires us to paint two paintings, one sample from a folder of references and the second from a reference of our own, after we complete three mandatory paintings. So that would be 27 paintings in all.

The first required painting is the "onion painting" which I posted earlier. The next painting is the above Pear painting in which we're required to do a violet underpainting with a large filbert and complete with a flat starting with the dark areas and moving to the lightest. This photo makes that couch back where the pears are sitting look more purple than it actually is. I need to get my photo tent set up and use my tripod for better photos.

Next week I'll have the apple painting which is done as a violet underpainting with a large filbert and finishing dark to light with a filbert. That will complete the first three mandatory paintings and then I'll move on to the 12 exercises each to be done twice with a class reference and a personal reference.

I love having a plan for study all mapped out!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Happy New Year

Can you believe that it's 2009? If you're in the area please stop by!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Apples In A Sunny Window

This week at my oil class Joyce Hall, my instructor, did a demo using a palette knife. Gini Conn of Spring Hill, Florida is just such a teacher!

Recently Gini purchased door basket surfaces for her students. I'm attaching their baskets. They're so excited! And they finished the whole thing in just over 2 hours! I'm planning on teaching it again next month.

They really love the surface and the project. I don't think my feet touched the ground when I walked out of the store!

Thank you so much, Gini! This one will be for sale for $35.00.

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Red Sox Ornament

I haven't had time to finish up the bouquet painting but plan on doing so this weekend. I was always the teacher's pet who couldn't wait to go back to school! Nothing like a brand new #2 pencil and a clean notebook! Right, Mom?!

Well, that's how I felt yesterday when I arrived at class almost 30 minutes early...eager to breathe in the smells of the studio and see what new work Joyce had completed during the break.

For her demo Joyce showed us, for the new students, how to lay in or block in a painting. Focus on the large fields of color and areas of dark and light. This is my first pass at a 10x10 canvas with a floral bouquet. The bouquet is in a glass vase which sits on a silver tray. That will be my next challenge.

Silver may be a color but a silver tray is anything but silver! So much reflective light mirroring the purples and blues and yellows around it. And then there's the challenge of painting the elliptical shape of the tray and having it even!

More to come as I work on this new challenge!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

A Painting For Michael

This is Sidney, our Australian Shepherd. I was looking for something more dramatic than glitter when I found crystal vase fill for floral arrangements. I was amazed that it stuck to the gallery glass...but it did! It's been a week now and, once the loose ones were knocked off, the "crystal" has hardened beautifully.

I'm not sure what I'll do next, whether a photo or painting inside or a painting on the window. Any ideas?

The second ornament made it to the tree. Sarah and I worked on it together. She wanted to paint it like a wrapped present. I swirled paint inside the ornament first. On the outside I painted a ribbon shape with gold paint. That didn't stand out so we used FA Gems paint to edge the ribbon. Still not dramatic enough. I found some Liquid Beadz and tried those. Success!

Today I'm off to work for a while and then I need to find a frame for a painting that I finished yesterday. I'll share it with you after the recipient finds it under the tree on Christmas morning!

I'll check in with you tomorrow with my Christmas Card for you all!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Oh Christmas Tree!

Every year, after the tree is trimmed and the lights are turned on for the first time, we all insist that surely this is the prettiest tree we've EVER had! It happens without fail. It's that eternal optimism that warms my heart!

This year is no exception. The tree glows with tiny white lights, newer shiny ornaments and old handmade ones. Two of my favorites were made by my children Michael (now 28) and Rebecca (now 25) when they were in grade school.

Michael's is a wooden tree laced with glitter and sporting his school picture, while Rebecca's is an angel crafted from an oyster shell.

Tomorrow I'll have a few more in the series of glass ornaments. I painted him about 6 years ago and am embarrassed to say that I still have not finished him! There are some unfinished details on the right side . . . tactfully tucked behind the silk tree. . . that haunt me! Every year I tell myself that he won't take his postion again until he's complete, and then, well you know the rest! He is designed by Ronnie Bringle. We painted him in a class and Tami, my teacher at the time, had the wood cutter enlarge the pattern to make him about 4 feet tall.

Santa quietly watches everyone from this spot. My granddaughter Sarah loves to go stand next to him and compare her height to that of the little girl. It wasn't that long ago that they were the same size!

Christmas traditions evolve...they can't be forced. Many years ago, when my children were small, I asked them to tell me what our tradition were. Their list wasn't the same as mine. That's when I realized that traditions are very personal and that it's up to each of us to keep our traditions alive.

Tomorrow I'll have pictures of our tree and some of my favorite ornaments made by my children when they were in grade school!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

This Year's Special Ornament

First, I have to apologize for the quality of the second photo. I took this with my cell phone and you can see the glare from the store window. I had good intentions of photographing it at home before I sent the two ornaments to my mom and sister....but you know what they say about good intentions! They were packed and in the mail when I realized that I had skipped that step!

I have to thank my sister, Patty, for helping me pull this one off. I couldn't find my copy of this picture of the three of us. Patty mailed me hers after delicately removing it from its frame. I scanned it into the computer and repaired a few creases and cracks.

The ornament itself is a larger 4 inch ornament. I really enjoyed working with it and hope to do more.

If you're interested in having me make you a Memories Under Glass Ornament please e-mail me. They make wonderful gifts for just about any occassion. I have a couple of options for displaying your ornament as well. After the first of the year I'll be formally introducing this new product, but I wanted to share it with you first!

Tomorrow I'll show you our tree and some of the handmade ornaments!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Another Family Treasure

This little tray is 10 years old. My solution here was to begin with a plan and a very large Scruffy Brush. That's it!

I removed the hardware and set it aside. It was pounced with FA Sunflower and White, as was the trim. The base was pounced with FA Bayberry and White; the top with FA Night Sky and white. The hardest part was the occasional cramping in my wrist!

I did clean the piece in advance, and, if I had it do do over again I might give it a quick coat of spray Kilz. But, the after piece was finished and varnished no one knew it wasn't primed....and, when all is said and done, it has passed the test of time!

So grab that Scruffy and start pouncing! My sister Patty did the walls of the flower shop with a large Scruffy. It's clearly the "duct tape" of the decorative painter!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Rose Spray on Journal

This is a journal painted for an on line painting group exchange. He was designed by Jill "Winna" Mordasky and we had the best time painting him in a workshop. Winna gave us permission, and instructions, to reproduce him by decoupaging a good color copy to a piece of wood. Her conditions were that we credit her on the reverse side.

So I decided to try something different by incorporating a copy of the painted Santa with some text using MS Publisher. Michael photographed the Santa for me using a black background. I pulled it into a document in Publisher and zoomed in to crop the photo to focus on his head and torso. I then added a circle of text which reads, "Nothing Could Be Finer Than Christmas In Carolina".

I printed the image on heavy paper, decoupaged to a piece of slate painted black and then added gold trim with a paint pen. On the back I wrote "Design By Jill "Winna" Mordasky on one side and my name and date on the other. Creativity and Technology.... ain't it grand!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Coral Rose

My son Michael is a professional photographer. I love the history it represents. The more dings and chips the better I like them! They remind me of my grandmother's kitchen where Patty and I watched her make bread, rolls and pies....and waited not so patiently for her wonderful fried dough treats!

This painting is a small 5x7 oil on canvas board. I painted it in a class with Tami Cardnella. I was checking the nooks and crannies of the studio and found lots of old enamelware that was destined to be painted with fruit designs and sold at craft shows. I may try to set up some still lifes for oil paintings before I do that!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Recycling Cookie Tins

For many years I worked in a church office. At this time of year parishioners would bring the office staff lots of fabulous treats packed in tins. When the tinsel settled I would gather up all the tins and pack them away.

Recycled tins make a great gift packed with baked goods, or hand painted soaps and towels, to name a few ideas. Clean them out well with hot soapy water. I let mine air dry to be sure that the inside remains rust free. I give each one a light...and I mean light...coat of spray primer in white. I do the tops and bottoms separately. I love the snowy scenes, like the one above, that remind me of New England. This one was inspired by a design I saw in a magazine years ago.

Snowy scenes obviously lend themselves nicely to the white base. If you want more of a year round design after you have the white base give the base a coat of Linen or light green paint mixed with glaze. While still wet apply a piece of plastic wrap...push it around slightly...and then pull off to reveal a marbled look. Let it dry well and paint a suitable design. Sometimes you need only paint the design on the lid itself.

When your design is dry give it several light coats of a sealer. Pack with goodies and watch the smiles!!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Pair Of Lemons

This pair of lemons was painted in my first oil class with local artist Tami Cardnella. I started the day with calls from my mom and aunt in Massachusetts, and my sister in Vermont. I miss them so much, but even more on these special days. I spent the balance of the day surrounded by Eddie, the kids and grands. Couldn't ask for much more!

I missed a post or two getting ready for today. I wanted to catch up by showing you the progress I'm making on Sarah's portrait. Joyce, my teacher, really helped me to correct the feet. The shadows on her skin are not as red as they are in this photo. Next week I'll finish her up. She needs to be grounded more connecting her to the background better. I need to add some more highlights to her oversized gloves and hat.

I just love my oil classes!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com

Large Basket with Reversible Insert!

This basket is my favorite. I display this one year round. The photo inside the ornament is of the Morris Island Light House off Folly Beach, South Carolina. Learn more about this national treasure at: http://www.savethelight.org/

The ornament itself is covered in glitter and has a window with swag draperies and candle. You can paint it yourself by using some tape or a 2"x3" post-it note to cover the proposed window while you pounce the ornament with a pearl metallic enamel paint. When dry paint your window and candle. For a finishing touch paint all but the actually window with Mod Podge and roll in glitter.

Finally, insert your picture...ahhhh, the tricky part! I print out my photos on a sheet of transparency paper. I then give the reverse side of the transparency paper a coat of spray-on white primer. This allows the bright color of the photo to stay crisp, but you still have the properties of the transparency when it comes to cutting, rolling it on a pencil, and inserting it in the ornament. It will pop open. Be sure to cut the photo circle to the same diameter as the ornament. This one is 3.25". After your photo is inside you can use the pencil to position it properly.

For another style, paint the ornament with shutters instead of curtains and have the photo be of family inside the house. These make a very special gift!

Contact Kathy At kathysweeney@gmail.com for more information.

Door Baskets With Reversible Inserts

Here is one of my pet projects. In the photo to the left the two front ornaments have painted inserts to view through the window, while the back ornament has the rose painted on the glass itself.

The base ornament is clear glass. First use Gallery Glass gold leading squiggled in a circle to create the viewing area. Let dry over night. Then use the clear glass Gallery Glass applied roughly around the outside of the circle and sprinkled with cheap glitter while wet. Let dry.

Now you have the option of filling in the small circle and painting in that area, or leave the circle clear, like a window, and paint your design on transparency paper to insert in the ornament.

In the first photo I used a pale pink Gallery Glass to fill in the window. Let dry. Finally, paint your rose or design on the dry smooth center. This one is a rose in the Marjorie Harris Clark style.

To insert a painted design, paint your design on a piece of transparency paper (from office supply store). The circle should be the same diameter as the ornament. When your painting is dry roll the transparency around a pencil and insert in the ornament!

Contact Kathy at kathysweeney@gmail.com

A Work In Progress

I've started this portrait in class of my granddaughter, Sarah Mae. Sarah, now six, was three at the time and very much into dress up. She was sporting an oversized straw hat of mine along with a pair of long gloves that were much to big for her tiny hands.

I've roughed in the painting and will complete it in class next week. She needs a lot of work to add dimension and bring her forward more. The Studio, owned and operated by artists Joyce Hall and her husband Martin Ahrens, is an amazing place. I was so fortunate to find such wonderful teachers and generous individuals.

Each new student begins their journey by painting this particular piece. It's an opportunity for Joyce and Martin to gauge the students experience.

Joyce tells me that she spots this painting all over town. I love it because it represents a big step for me; the first step in my painters journey!

Juggling Act

I'm really enjoying my classes! Often it's a juggling act just to get there but when I do the rest of the world fades away and time stands still.

This little Fall veggie vignette reminded me of what it had taken me to just get to class that day! Joyce had me paint the background with a variety of colors but all in the same value.
